The modern game of golf (something other than some Scottish herdsman pounding
a rock around with a crooked stick) is relatively young.
Why, the oldest
and most venerable tournament in the world, the British Open (or just "The
Open" to everyone outside the U.S.) is only 129 years old. The U.S. Open
was first contested at Newport Country Club in 1895.
The game of golf did
not hit its full stride in the States until the late twenties Legends Gene Sarazen, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagan Headlined a sport distinguished by
its elite membership.
